About Cayenne

Capital of French Guiana, Cayenne is situated in the Amazonia region of South America bordering the North Atlantic Ocean between Brazil and Suriname. The city has various museums including one celebrating French Guianese Culture plus the fascinating Guiana Space Centre. The rivers Maroni, Oyapock, Mana and Approuague are home to native Amerindians and Maroons and popular for boat trips and adventure activities. But Cayenne's resonating reputation is much more grisly.

Take a trip to 'Devil's Island,' a French penal colony until as recent as 1953. This palm-covered island is surrounded by rocky outcrops and battered by strong cross-currents and shark-infested waters.
