First P&O Cruises Wedding at Sea

This year marks the 10th anniversary of P&O Cruises Weddings at Sea. On a cruise to the Canaries on Oceana in April 2006, Alan and Sue Boffey became the first couple to tie the knot at sea with P&O Cruises. ‘We didn’t want a traditional church wedding,’ explains Sue. ‘We were planning a family holiday anyway and being able to get married while we were on the cruise was just ideal for us.’

‘When we were booking our holiday, weddings at sea weren’t something you could do on P&O Cruises ships,’ adds Alan. ‘We’d already been on holiday with P&O Cruises four or five times previously and knew that we loved the ships, so we asked them if it would be possible to do. We love cruising that much and we thought it would be the ideal wedding. We just wanted to do something a bit different and a bit special.’

‘P&O Cruises really did pull out all of the stops for us, we had the best of everything,’ Alan explains. ‘We had such peace of mind as everything is taken care of. At the beginning, they asked a few questions about how we’d like the day to go, our choice of flowers, what we’d like for the wedding breakfast. Then we handed everything over to them to organise, which is one of the reasons we liked the idea so much – there is so much to do normally for a wedding, but for us there was absolutely no stress. All we had to do was turn up on the morning! The chef on board even baked our wedding cake for us.’

The couple had their family with them for the special holiday. ‘Sue’s parents were there, and our six-year-old son Stephen was our ring-bearer. It was a good excuse for a family get-together,’ says Alan. ‘It was great because we could have our wedding day just as grand or as simple as we wanted. Everything went more smoothly than I could ever have expected and the weather was absolutely lovely, too,’ adds Sue.

‘We got married just off the coast of Madrid. Our marriage certificate actually gives the nautical reading of where we got married,’ laughs Alan. ‘From the moment we were married, which was on day four of an 11-night cruise, it was our honeymoon. So we had our wedding, our honeymoon and a holiday all in one. Just perfect.’
